American Environmental Services, known by most as AES, was founded in 1988 by our owner and Chief Executive Officer Dave Torrence. Mr. Torrence, an avid entrepreneur, started the corporation with the vision of providing superior environmental services throughout the United States.
Below, you will find a brief description of the history and successful growth of AES.
1988 to 1996 – Early years of development.
During the early years, AES was a very small company of 5-10 employees providing hazardous waste removal services to military bases on long term fixed pricing contracts. All of AES’s revenue was derived from servicing Military Contracts. All transportation and disposal of the waste was to third party facilities not owned or operated by AES. The company was very successful and profitable, but was a business 100% reliant upon government revenue and contracts.
1996 to 2000 – Identity Years.
With all revenue coming from government contracts, the decision was made by Mr. Torrence to not be a small government-depended business. AES expanded into the commercial sector by hiring sales representatives in key areas where we could cross utilize the field people servicing the government contracts to service our new commercial clients. In addition, we expanded our service lines to include field services, remediation, decontamination and other billable labor. At this time AES still owned nothing and depended upon third party companies to provide our service to the customers.
2001 to 2005 – Infrastructure Building and Aggressive Growth.
During these five years AES experienced tremendous growth in revenue and infrastructure building. Mr. Torrence decided that AES must acquire assets. AES purchased and revived two fully permitted Hazardous Waste Part B Facilities in Morgantown, WV and Calvert City, KY. AES also purchased new transportation equipment and processing equipment for our plants. Employee headcount grew from 25 to 110. AES now owns capital equipment and facilities. Revenues are 50% government and 50% commercial versus 100% government in prior years. Field Service and transportation continue to grow as a supplement to our core disposal business.
2006 to present – Diversification and Core Growth.
AES’s strong aggressive growth continues in both the private and government sectors by utilizing the assets purchased in the previous years and expanding our geographic coverage. Green America, a joint venture with Continental Cement, is formed to secure our long term disposal outlet for fuels related wastes. In addition, AES facilities are significantly upgraded and AES’s Calvert City Facility is changed to be high volume facility to accommodate our growth.
